The True Glory is widely regarded as one of the greatest war documentaries ever made.
Co-directed by the legendary Carol Reed (Odd Man Out, Oliver!), this film was produced by the Allied military during 1944 and 1945 as a visual record of the campaign in Europe. It covers the major engagements from D-Day to the fall of Berlin, including Omaha Beach, the Falaise Gap, Caen, Arnhem, the liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Bulge. Compiled from select footage from over six and a half million feet of film, it includes some of the most devastating and memorable images of war ever captured on camera.
Over 700 frontline cameramen supplied material for the film. 32 were killed, 101 wounded and a further 16 reported as missing in action during its making. With an introduction by General Eisenhower, who was personally involved in the production, The True Glory won the Oscar for Best Documentary.
